Four indicators of SNCB punctuality

No single indicator tells the whole story. To work out its punctuality, SNCB measures train delays at a few specific points. Here we offer other indicators, built around passengers’ journeys rather than trains.

Of the four indicators, this one comes closest to what passengers live through. Here is how we work it out.

We replay every journey
Every day, every home-to-work trip by train: in the morning to reach work before 9:00, in the evening leaving at 17:00.
With the SNCB app
Our commuter checks it every 5 minutes and changes route as soon as a delay is announced. Once on a late train, they can only get off at the next station.
Weighted by the number of commuters
A trip many people make counts for more. The result is the punctuality of journeys, not just of trains.

Weighting: the 2011 and 2021 censuses and the federal home-to-work survey. The resulting distribution follows SNCB’s passenger counts. Across the hypotheses we tested, the indicator moves by less than one point. SNCB’s own travel data would make the estimate more precise still.
